Overview:
A respected and long-standing organization in the nuclear services and environmental remediation space is seeking a seasoned Health Physicist to support its national Projects Group. This is a senior-level role responsible for leading the execution of a comprehensive Radiation Safety Program across multiple Canadian facilities and external project sites. The successful candidate will act as the lead subject matter expert in radiation protection, ensuring full alignment with federal regulatory requirements and providing support for radiological licensing, shipping compliance, and decommissioning activities.
What you will be doing: Lead the implementation of the company’s Radiation Safety Program in collaboration with the Projects Director and designated Radiation Safety Officer (RSO). Conduct and oversee radiation hazard assessments, including Radiation Risk Assessments (RRAs), Radiation Work Permits (RWPs), and technical reviews of radiological activities. Supervise and mentor frontline health physics personnel, ensuring performance standards and professional development are met. Provide technical and regulatory support for licensing submissions and compliance activities involving the federal nuclear regulatory body. Oversee characterization and packaging of radioactive materials, ensuring full compliance with TDG and IAEA SSR-6 requirements for classification and transport. Support field projects involving decommissioning and remediation, including radiological survey planning and completion of final status documentation. Deliver internal radiation protection training and promote best practices in safety and compliance across all project activities. Liaise with internal teams, external partners, and regulatory authorities to ensure safe and compliant execution of radiological work. Participate in emergency response functions as part of the health physics on-call rotation.
What you must have: Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Science, Radiological Engineering, or a closely related field (Master’s degree preferred). Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in radiation protection or health physics, ideally in project-oriented or field-based environments. Certification (or eligibility) through the Canadian Radiation Protection Association (CRPA) or the American Board of Health Physics (CHP) is highly valued. In-depth knowledge of Canadian nuclear regulatory requirements, MARSSIM methodology, CSA standards, and applicable transport/export regulations. Strong technical writing skills and experience drafting detailed regulatory submissions, operational reports, and compliance documentation. Demonstrated leadership capability in managing multidisciplinary teams within radiological safety operations. Familiarity with radiological modeling software (e.g., MicroShield) and standard office productivity tools. Valid driver’s license and passport. Willingness to travel to various project locations as required.
